Martial use

The bokken presented in this set is a personal interpretation of a standard model. It preserves the spirit of the bokken commonly used in dojo while incorporating several adjustments developed through the work of the workshop and our own practice experience: a slightly reduced blade curvature, a slightly longer handle, and a geometry designed for a natural and stable grip.

This type of bokken is now widely used in Aikido and has proven itself in aikiken practice.
Its balance and fluidity in the cut allow practitioners to work with precision while remaining comfortable during regular training sessions.

The jo has a classic length, with a slightly larger diameter than those commonly found in Japan. From experience, a diameter of around 25 mm works particularly well with European hardwoods and suits Aiki-jo techniques very well.

This set provides a solid foundation for practitioners looking for reliable and versatile weapons.

Manufacturer’s note

The three weapons in this set are made from ash wood selected specifically for martial arts practice. Ash is both strong and resilient, allowing it to absorb impact while maintaining good durability. It also has a moderate weight, lighter than Japanese oak, which makes it particularly suitable for regular training.

Like all Manmori weapons, this set is made from carefully selected European ash wood chosen for their qualities in martial arts practice. These woods offer a balanced combination of strength, flexibility, durability and lightness.

Each piece is handcrafted in our workshop in the Périgord region of France. The shapes are progressively refined using traditional tools in order to achieve a natural balance and a comfortable handling.

The sanding process is carried out using very fine-grit papers, always worked along the grain of the wood to preserve the structure of the material and obtain a smooth and consistent surface.

The weapons are then finished with two coats of oil, which nourish and protect the wood while maintaining its natural appearance and feel.

This careful process allows us to create simple, well-balanced and durable weapons designed for regular practice.

Would you like these weapons to be engraved?

Engravings on bokken and jo are made by hand using traditional wood burning (pyrography). We can transcribe your first and last name into Japanese katakana.

You may also choose to have kanji (Japanese characters) engraved.

The inscriptions are made vertically:

– On bokken, the engraving follows the direction from the tip toward the handle and is usually placed on the blade just above the guard.

– On jo, the engraving is placed at the center of the staff.

Once you have made your choice in the dropdown menu, please enter the text to be engraved in the “Engraving text” field.
