Martial Use

This set is intended for practitioners who wish to experience a slightly different feeling from the standard Aikido bokken. The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu style bokken encourages a more attentive approach to the line of the cut, rhythm, and quality of movement.

It is particularly interesting for developing precision and awareness of distance in aikiken practice, while maintaining a fluid and natural approach.

Together, the three weapons form a coherent set for training with bokken, jo, and tanto in a way that remains close to what is practiced in many Aikido dojo.

The maker’s note

The three weapons included in this set are made from ash wood carefully selected for martial arts practice. Ash is both strong and flexible, allowing it to absorb impact while maintaining good durability. It also has a moderate weight, lighter than Japanese oak, which makes it particularly suitable for regular training.

The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu bokken originally comes from the traditional Japanese school of swordsmanship of the same name. Over time, it has become popular beyond this school, and many Aikido practitioners have adopted it as their preferred bokken for Aikiken practice.

Its overall lines harmonize particularly well with the movements and principles found in Aikido weapon practice. The relatively long tsuka combined with a slender blade and a discreet curvature allows smooth transitions between techniques and encourages precision in movement.

This bokken has a strong and distinctive character. Its slightly straighter blade, together with the characteristic angled tip, gives the weapon a unique identity while maintaining excellent versatility in practice.

The jo has a classic length but with a slightly larger diameter than those commonly found in Japan. From experience, a diameter of 25 mm works particularly well with European ash and suits Aiki-jo techniques.

The tanto is slightly longer and slimmer than standard models, which improves handling during Aikido techniques.

As with all Manmori wooden weapons, these pieces are handcrafted in our workshop in the Périgord region of France. The final shaping is carried out using traditional hand planes in order to achieve a precise and natural balance. The weapons are finished with a white oil that protects the wood while preserving its natural appearance.

Would you like these weapons to be engraved?

Engravings on bokken and jo are made by hand using traditional wood burning (pyrography). We can transcribe your first and last name into Japanese katakana.

You may also choose to have kanji (Japanese characters) engraved.

The inscriptions are made vertically:

– On bokken, the engraving follows the direction from the tip toward the handle and is usually placed on the blade just above the guard.

– On jo, the engraving is placed at the center of the staff.

Once you have made your choice in the dropdown menu, please enter the text to be engraved in the “Engraving text” field.
