The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu bokken is appreciated for its relatively straight blade, long handle and distinctive beveled tip.
Favoured by many Aikido practitioners for its fluid handling, it allows precise and natural movement in the practice of aikiken. Handcrafted in France in our Manmori workshop from carefully selected ash wood.
Originally associated with the tradition of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, this type of bokken has become popular beyond its original school.
Its shape harmonizes particularly well with the principles and movements found in Aikiken, which explains why many Aikido practitioners have adopted it as their preferred training weapon.
The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu bokken is distinguished by its relatively straight blade, long handle, and characteristic beveled tip, giving it a strong identity while remaining versatile in training.
This type of bokken originates from the tradition of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, one of the classical Japanese sword schools known for its precise and fluid movements. Its shape harmonizes particularly well with Aikiken principles, which is why many Aikido practitioners have adopted it as their preferred training weapon.
The long handle and slightly slimmer blade encourage smooth transitions between techniques, refined timing, and natural control. The bokken has a subtly forward-balanced feel, with the weight slightly shifted towards the tip, which enhances the sensation of cutting and provides a more dynamic response during strikes. Its beveled tip also offers a subtle visual and tactile distinction, enhancing the practitioner’s awareness of edge and point during training.
Like all the weapons offered on this site, this bokken is made from carefully selected ash wood, offering a good balance between lightness, strength, flexibility, and durability.
Each piece is entirely finished by hand in our workshop in the Périgord region of France, using traditional tools, in order to achieve a natural balance, a refined finish, and a genuine connection with the material.
This Yagyu Shinkage Ryu bokken is ideal for martial artists seeking a training weapon that combines distinctive character, precision, and fluidity, supporting committed practice and skill refinement.
Engravings on bokken and jo are made by hand using traditional wood burning (pyrography). We can transcribe your first and last name into Japanese katakana.
You may also choose to have kanji (Japanese characters) engraved.
The inscriptions are made vertically:
– On bokken, the engraving follows the direction from the tip toward the handle and is usually placed on the blade just above the guard.
– On jo, the engraving is placed at the center of the staff.
Once you have made your choice in the dropdown menu, please enter the text to be engraved in the “Engraving text” field.
