Martial use

Inspired by the large battlefield swords known as nodachi or odachi, this bokken is used to explore distance, timing and body coordination in sword practice.

It is particularly suited for practitioners interested in developing wide, committed movements and full-body engagement.

Manufacturer's note

The Nodachi bokken is inspired by the long swords historically used on the battlefield in Japan. Its extended length and proportions make it a distinctive training weapon, quite different from standard bokken.

The increased reach requires a greater involvement of the whole body, encouraging coordinated movement from the hips and a clear connection between posture, footwork and cutting action. Handling a nodachi bokken naturally develops awareness of maai (distance) and timing, as even small variations in positioning become more apparent.

Because of its size and weight, this bokken invites a committed and expansive style of practice, where precision must be maintained through larger movements. It offers a valuable training experience for practitioners wishing to deepen their understanding of structure and flow.

As with all Manmori wooden weapons, this bokken is made from carefully selected ash wood, offering a good balance between strength, flexibility, durability, and lightness.

Each piece is entirely finished by hand in our workshop in the Périgord region of France, using traditional tools, in order to achieve a precise balance, a refined finish, and a genuine connection with the material.

Would you like these weapons to be engraved?

Engravings on bokken and jo are made by hand using traditional wood burning (pyrography). We can transcribe your first and last name into Japanese katakana.

You may also choose to have kanji (Japanese characters) engraved.

The inscriptions are made vertically:

– On bokken, the engraving follows the direction from the tip toward the handle and is usually placed on the blade just above the guard.

– On jo, the engraving is placed at the center of the staff.

Once you have made your choice in the dropdown menu, please enter the text to be engraved in the “Engraving text” field.
